The Metal Injection Molding (MIM) process combines the design flexibility of plastic injection molding with the strength and integrity of wrought metals to offer cost effective solutions for highly complex part geometries. Metal Injection Molding process is typically explained as four unique processing steps (Compounding, Molding, Debinding and Sintering) to produce a final part that may or may not need final finishing operations.
The phases of the Metal Injection Molding process
Mixing
Metal powder and organic ligands are mixed in order to obtain a
mixture called “feedstock.” At the end of this operation, we obtain
the first matter for the injection molding.
Injection
After the realization of the mould with the desired figures, the
“feedstock” is injected in the holes of the mould in order to
obtain the single pieces, which are called “green pieces” in this
particular phase.
Debinding
The organic part, which gives shape to metallic particles, is
removed partially after the injection. This phase is called
“debinding”. At the end of this process, the pieces are called
“brown pieces”.
Sintering
The “brown pieces” are put in the furnace with high temperature in
order to permit the sintering of metal powder and to obtain
high-density objects.
Post treatment
The pieces can be finished with metal workings, grading, thermal
treatments (for example case-hardening, carbonitriding, tempering),
surface treatments, (for example nickel-plating, chromium-planting,
bluing, anodizing, electro-burnishing).

2. If considered for strengthening the texture or surface hardness, then additional heat treatment and other processing are required.
3.Testing facilities: equipped with 2.5D image measuring instrument, high resolution projector, surface roughness tester, hardness tester, microscope, and all required pin gauges.
