In the wire mesh industry, plain steel – or carbon steel, as it sometimes referred to—is a very popular metal that is commonly manufactured in both woven and welded wire mesh specifications. It is primarily composed of iron (Fe) with a small amount of carbon (C). It is a relatively low cost option that is versatile and widespread in its use.
Plain steel wire mesh – available from stock or through custom manufacturing – is strong, durable and magnetic. Oftentimes, it is dark in color, particularly when compared to bright aluminum or stainless steel meshes. Plain steel does not resist corrosion and will rust in most atmospheric conditions; because of this, in certain industries, plain steel wire mesh is a disposable item.
There are times when certain users will opt to coat a plain steel welded or woven wire mesh. This is normally considered an aftermarket process as there are dozens of coating options, including galvanizing, PVC or powder coating, and special paints and coatings.
Galvanized welded wire fabric is economic and practical for many applications, just as its name implies, the surface of welded mesh is coated with a thin layer of Zinc in order to prevent rust, it has two different surface treatments, galvanized before weld and galvanized after weld, both of them have their advantages and disadvantages.
Welded wire fabric which is galvanized before weld uses galvanized iron wire to be welded into various mesh sizes derectly, but during the welding process, the Zinc coating at each welding intersection is destroyed, this causes that all the welding points are easy to rust in the humid environment because they have lost the galvanizing protection.
Welded wire mesh that is galvanized after welding is last longer than that galvanized before welding, because it’s made of the untreated surface welded mesh which is dipped into to the molten zinc, the entire mesh including the welding spots is covered with much more zinc. So generally welded wire mesh which is galvanized before welding is cheaper than that is galvanized after welding.
